2002 - 2008
Louie Fountain, Jon Kooley, Katrina Voutilainen, Wille Yli-Luoma, Travis Parker, Brian Savard and Bobby Meeks make up the K2 Int'l Pro Team in 2003. Its been 15 years making snowboards now and we have survived through the continual evolution of the snowboard industry, leading the way in technology and innovation. '03/04 brought the WWW, Travis Parker's side project for the park fanatic. Gretchen Bleiler joins our pro team to step it up to new levels for women. Most notably, '03/04 was our first year working with Boa Cable Closure Systems for the most precise fit with a quick turn of a nob. Cinch Technology progresses the sport forward with its debut in '04/05. An innovative binding design that only K2 was capable of bringing to the market first. We also introduce Vibram, makers of the best soles in footwear, to our boot line. We've extended our commitment to women by donating one percent of net sales to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. With this, we created the K2 Women's Alliance, a team of female shredders that will guide the way our women's products will look, feel and perform. In '05/06, the Mix, Zeppelin and Darkstar each win the Transworld Good Wood award. K2 becomes the only company to win in all 3 categories. The Zeppelin has its 10 year anniversary and we welcome Cinch technology to the women's binding collection. The K2 Alliance debuts their first line of products designed and dedicated to the progression of women's snowboarding, introducing a new women's snowboard core and advancements in every category. With it's big pow heritage, we brought the Eldorado back in '06/07 and introduce Integrated S-Class technology, keeping you riding stronger and longer. We partner with Intuition, stiched thermo forming EVA liners. The Jibpan enters the freestyle line of boards and the Duchess answers all the ladies powder prayers.
1998 - 2002
K2's first women's specific board, the Luna was introduce in
'98/99. The Luna went on to become and still remains one of the best selling boards on the market. K2 launched a backcountry line of products the year before and adds Clicker crampons to it for this season. A new line of outerwear is developed using SympaTex®, a waterproof, breathable fabric. In
2000/01 the team was Travis Parker, Chris Engelsman, Brian Savard, Tina Dixon, Louie Fountain, Marco Lutz, Martina Tscharner, and new members Bobby Meeks and Wille Yli-Luoma. Weå rented out Mt Baker for 3 days for the first annual Festical. Over 300 dealers from all over the world come to camp out, snowboard, and party with K2 Snowboarding staff. After making the cap then sidewall then cap boards, we finally developed the best of both worlds in
'01/02. Hybritech Construction is introduced with a cap tip and tail and a sidewall throughout the rest of the board. Travis Parker's pro model, the Scorpaznatica, and Wille Yli-Luoma's pro model, the Temptation are the newest snowboards. The Mix is the new, aggressive women's board.
1993 - 1998
Between '93 and '98, freestyle became a big focus - all boards, the AC, HC, and DC series, were made with torsion box construction. We also introduced almost 300 snowboarders to the backcountry over the next 5 years by taking shop employees from all over the country on an annual trip to hike Mt. Rainier in Washington. K2 Bindings joined the boards in
'93, introducing a binding with an asym offset adjustable highback. According to our team, it was the new standard. In '
93/94 we introduced the first wide board for big footers, the FATBOB also known as the "Original Fatty" variable width theory. We also introduced the Freestyle Vario Binding that had slots in the disc using a new 4x4 insert pattern for infinite stance adjustments, becoming the first U.S. Company to standardize a hole pattern and keep it - eventually uniting 99% of all manufacturers.
'94/95 also brought the Blueball line of freestyle boots. Anyone remember that?! The team back then consisted of Daniel Franck, Dan Donnelly, Shawn Farmer, Morgan LaFonte, Nick Perata, Kevin Young, Tex Davenport, Tim Manning and Adam Merriman. In
'95/96 we launched the first step-in binding, the Clicker Step-In System at the SIA show in Las Vegas. Daniel Franck also got his own pro model... yes, the one we get weekly requests for to this day! In
'96/97 our new team riders were Travis Parker and Marius Sommer. We introduced the Zeppelin, the first board with torsion fork technology, designed to go up instead of just down. K2 staff and 140 shop employees hike Mt Rainier for the last time. The party got so big they didn't welcome us back! Entirely new for
'97/98 was the K2 Backcountry line of snowboard-specific products for life beyond the lifts. The world's first step-in snowshoe, along with section snowboard poles, telescoping snow shovel and board carrying packs all joined the K2 collection.
1987 - 1992
Born in the Pacific Northwest in the shadows of the Cascade mountains, K2 Snowboarding was raised in the backcountry of Mt. Baker. From the beginning, our goal has been to create original concepts and technology that drives snowboarding forward. In
1987, we made our first board; the Gyrator. We introduced cap construction boards to the market in 1987 with the Gyrator. They were constructed with a fiberglass wrapped foam core, aluminum binding retention system, UV protected ABS top sheet, and steel edges. We made our own boards on Vashon Island, WA. Unlike almost all other companies back then, who lined up their boards in the Euro ski factories to produce a lot of generic product with different color paint jobs. We have always produced and designed our own products. We created Hybrid construction in
1990, which took advantage of both laminate and torsion box techniques. Backing the best riders in the industry from day one, '87 through '92 produced K2 riders Nye Donnelly, Dobis, Riggins, Perata, Merriman, Legaz and last but not least, Farmer.
